Cinnamon Apple French Toast
This recipe was born on a crisp, fall morning. Duh. My Cardamom Vanilla syrup puts this over the edge and we love cheating with slightly stale cinnamon bread to achieve such a soul-warming morning entree. Why slightly stale? It actually holds up better than fresh bread and creates a better texture. Got time for a quick culinary history lesson? French toast in France is “pain perdu” which translates to “lost bread”. In an effort to avoid food waste, the French would bring back their stale bread to life by soaking it in a custard mixture and frying it. Thank the GODS they did and that we are blessed because of it. Try this twist on a classic with a side of bacon and strong cup of coffee on your next slow morning. And let’s send a “merci” to the French as it warms our souls on the way down. Enjoy, favorites!
MVP Ingredients: My Cardamom Vanilla Simple Syrup & slightly stale cinnamon bread
Kitchen Weapon of Choice: A piping hot skillet
Ingredients
1-2 apples of choice, I recommend at least one being Granny Smith
2 tbsp butter
2 tbsp sugar, brown or white
Splash of vanilla or vanilla bean paste
Pinch of salt
4 slices of bread of choice (cinnamon is our favorite, slightly stale is even better)
2 eggs
1 C of milk
Few pinches of cinnamon
Splash of cardamom vanilla syrup (in my recipe collection)
Spray/butter/oil to fry
Maple syrup or powdered sugar
Directions
Dice apples (we prefer the skin on).
Sauté with butter, sugar, cinnamon, vanilla and a pinch of salt until tender. Set aside.
Mix eggs, milk, cinnamon, syrup together in shallow dish.
Soak bread slices in mixture for a few seconds on each side, minimum.
Warm skillet, melt butter or use cooking spray, cook slices on both sides until golden brown and slightly crispy.
Cover in apple mixture. Serve with maple syrup or powdered sugar.
